Medical needles can be divided into four categories according to the shape of the needle tip:
①Round needle: Conical needle tip and smooth needle body, which can easily penetrate tissues, no cutting effect, small holes and light damage. It is mostly used to suture subcutaneous tissue, gastrointestinal tract, pleura and peritoneum, blood vessels, nerve sheaths, etc.
Blunt needle: The blunt needle and smooth needle body, with minimal tissue damage. It is used for blunt separation and suture of fragile tissues, such as liver and spleen surgery.
②Angle needle: The needle tip and needle body are both triangular in cross-section. The sharp needle tip and cutting edge make it easy to penetrate tough, thick, and difficult-to-puncture tissues. However, a larger hole will be left under the needle path, which is easy to damage the surrounding tissues and blood vessels, and the damage is large. It is mostly used to suture the skin, periosteum, aponeurosis, cartilage, etc. Angle needles are divided into positive angle needles and contra angle needles. The damage of the latter is slightly smaller than that of the former.
③Round body angle needle: a cutting needle tip and a smooth needle body, excellent penetrating performance, and minimal tissue damage.
④Shovel needle: The shovel-shaped needle tip and thin and flat needle body provide the highest smoothness required for fine surgery, especially suitable for ophthalmology use. According to the needle shape, medical needles can also be divided into curved needles and straight needles; according to the arc of the needle body, they are divided into: 1/4 arc, 3/8 arc, 1/2 arc, 5/8 arc, and so on.
